Safeguarding Freedom of Speech & Expression – Request for Intervention to Ensure Peaceful Screening of The Bengal Files in West Bengal

Appeal to the Hon’ble President of India

Respected Rashtrapati Ji,

We write with deep concern regarding a most unfortunate incident that strikes at the very heart of our democracy. Recently, the peaceful screening of the trailer of the film The Bengal Files was forcibly stopped in West Bengal. This act is not merely a disruption of artistic expression, but a direct assault on the sacred principles enshrined in our Constitution.

Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India unequivocally guarantees “the right to freedom of speech and expression” to all citizens. This includes:

• The right to express one’s views through speech, writing, art, cinema, and performance.
• The right of citizens to receive information, perspectives, and ideas.

When a duly certified film by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is obstructed from being screened, it amounts to a grave violation of constitutional rights. The Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that freedom of expression cannot be suppressed by threats, disruptions, or arbitrary interventions once CBFC certification is granted.

Therefore, we humbly appeal to you to:

• Direct the Government of West Bengal to ensure peaceful and unhindered public screening of The Bengal Files.
• Protect the fundamental rights of filmmakers, artists, and audiences from such unconstitutional curbs.
• Uphold the dignity of our democracy where art and expression flourish without fear.

Your timely intervention will not only safeguard the screening of one film but will also reaffirm the Republic’s solemn commitment to the freedom of speech and expression that defines our national identity.
